The police were yesterday trying to piece together the events that led to the deaths of a man and his nephew at Three Friends Mines, in Region 10, which has left a family looking for answers.

The deceased have been identified as Leonard Reece, 58, and his nephew, Ronald Wong, 36, who had been living together since the latter’s release from prison last month.

Wong, who is said to have been of unsound mind and had special needs, was previously incarcerated after being convicted for attempted murder and evidence available so far points to him chopping Reece about his body, although it is unclear how he suffered similar wounds. Reece is also said to have had one of his arms severed by his assailant.

Leonard’s brother, Maurice Reece, of Industrial Area, Mackenzie, Linden, told Sunday Stabroek that after being released from prison, Wong went to live with Leonard, who would usually cook for him every day.

According to police, Maurice Reece received a call from his niece, Marilyn Lyckerish, and was informed that his nephew chopped his brother. He then contacted his brother-in-law, Walter Reece, who also related the same story to him.

He subsequently went to the Mackenzie Police station and made a report, the police said.

According to the police, the Chairman of Three Friends Mines, who lives about two houses away from Leonard, mentioned that she was awakened at about 1.15 am by sounds from the now deceased man’s house. She immediately went out on her verandah and she said she saw Leonard’s son, Elvis, who is autistic, jumping through the eastern window from Leonard’s house. The police said that the 25-year-old man shouted twice in a loud tone of voice, saying “murder!” This led the chairman to raise an alarm and other neighbours came out and went over to Leonard’s house, where the gruesome discovery of his body was made.

Leonard, who was clad only in boxers, was found covered in blood with several wounds about his body, while Ronald’s body was found face down in a paddle boat in the river with several wounds.

Maurice Reece said his brother had one of his arms severed, while his nephew had chops about his body as well. He said that he is wondering what really happened because nobody was with them and could say what happened. He said that the man’s son told the neighbours that Ronald chopped his father. But, it is unclear what led to his nephew’s injuries and demise.

The scene was still being processed and persons were currently being interviewed, the police said yesterday.
