Vryheid’s Lust: Taxi driver robbed at knife point by `passengers’

A 30-year-old taxi driver was robbed at knife point of a quantity of cash and other valuables on Monday night by two perpetrators whom he picked up as passengers from Giftland Mall.

The victim was robbed of one Samsung Note 9 cellphone, one gold chain (value unknown), one diamond ring (value unknown), one gold ring (value unknown), and $405,000 in cash.

According to a police report, the driver was dispatched to pick up a passenger at Giftland Mall, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara. When he arrived there at about 9pm, he picked up two men who requested to be taken to Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

While the driver was in the vicinity of Vryheid’s Lust Masjid Road, ECD, the suspect sitting in the back seat placed a knife to the victim’s neck while the suspect seated in the front passenger seat relieved him of the afore-mentioned articles. The men then escaped.

The victim alerted persons in the area and a search was carried out by residents of Le Ressouvenir, who managed to apprehend an eighteen-year-old suspect and handed him over to the police. A search of the suspect, unearthed a knife, clothing and duct tape. The suspect was also observed to have injuries to the left side of his head.

Following his arrest, the suspect was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was seen by a doctor before being returned to the Sparendaam Police Station where he remains in custody. The second suspect is still at large.

Investigations are ongoing.
