West Indies all-rounder, Kyle Mayers, believes after the first day of the second Test against South Africa yesterday  that the match is still an even contest.

Playing in St. Lucia, West Indies won the toss and inserted the tourists who were kept to 218 for five after 82 overs.

“I think it’s pretty balanced, a good day out for both teams,” said Mayers.

“I mean the wicket as I said it got better for batting as the day went on so we can live with the five down and also they’re in a good position at 200-odd so I think it’s very balanced,” he stated.

With Dean Elgar (77) and Quinton de Kock (59 not out) adding 79 for the fifth wicket, it was Mayers who produced the breakthrough close to stumps by dismissing Elgar with a  delivery which pitched on a good length and came back in.

Of the removal of the South African skipper Mayers said, “I think it was a pretty important wicket. The guy at the crease was the captain who started the innings so I think it was a very vital wicket. He was batting well and looking to take his team to the end of play and it turned out to be a good wicket.”

Mayers feels  that the pitch had a bit of moisture as the ball moved a little but as the day went on swing was more suited than seam.

He credited the bowling contingent for consistently getting the ball in good areas and exercising patience.
