Step-sisters ordered to undergo counselling after quarrel over bucket

Two step-sisters have been ordered to undergo counselling after a city court heard that they had an argument over a bucket in their yard.

Sonia Summer, 50, and June Robinson, 52, both vendors living at North Ruimveldt, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court via the Brickdam Police Station Court Hub, yesterday when Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the charges to them.

Summer is accused of using abusive language and unlawfully assaulting Robinson on May 31, at their North Ruimveldt address. While Robinson was charged with unlawfully assaulting Summer, to cause actual bodily harm.

Robinson entered a guilty plea and explained to the court that she and Summer are step-sisters living in the same yard at North Ruimveldt. She said that she was washing clothes when Summer arrived home on May 31 and started using a series of profanities after she saw that a bucket she uses was in floodwater in the yard. Robinson said that she responded to Summer by also using the same language and that the woman then approached her and started poking her in her forehead while still cursing. She said that she became annoyed and hit the woman with a brush she had in her hand.

Summer meanwhile denied both charges and said that Robinson hit her with a piece of wood, not a brush. She further explained that she lives downstairs in the yard while Robinson lives upstairs. The police prosecutor told the court that a medical examination was undertaken at the Georgetown Public Hospital and it indicated that Summer suffered abrasions to the forehead.

The Magistrate ordered the two women to be counselled and placed Summer and Robinson on $5,000 bail and self-bail respectively. The matter was adjourned until July 14.
