Hockey team loses twice at Pan Am Cup competition

Guyana yesterday opened their Indoor Pan Am Cup (IPAC) campaign in Pennsylvania, USA with  consecutive defeats to defending champions and hosts USA as well as powerhouse Argentina.

In their first group match of the prestigious championship, the Guyanese, who are without captain Gabriella Xavier (Covid-19) and Sonia Jardine (ankle injury), lost to the Americans 20-2.

The halftime score of the lopsided fixture was 11-0. Hope Rose led the rout with conversions in the first, 14th, 16th, 17th, 23rd, 39th and 40th minute, with Ashley Sessa tallying five goals in the 12th, 18th, 18th, 30th and 38th minute.

The next best scorer with a hat-trick in the 27th, 29th and 39th minute was Elizabeth Yeager, with Ryleigh Heck adding a brace in the 7th and 15th minute and Corinne Zanolli bagging a double in the 8th and 19th minute.

Adding one goal was Madison Orobono in the 24th minute. For the Guyanese, rising star Abosaide Cadogan recorded a double in the 28th and 31st minute. In their second fixture, Argentina blanked Guyana by a 14-0 scoreline in another lopsided encounter.

Julia Gomes smashed a helmet trick in the 8th, 8th, 20th and 20th minute, with the trident of Carina Guzman, Romina Zanni and Luciana Agudo registering respective doubles.

Guzman scored in the second and 24th minute, while Zanni netted in the third and ninth minute alongside conversions from Agudo in the 33rd and 39th minute.

Chipping in with goals in the 12th, 28th, 29th and 35th minute apiece were Maria Nimo, Lara Irianni, Maria Berola and Juliana Ferreyra Rios.

The Guyanese who sit 31st in the ranking, will continue their campaign against 18th positioned Canada today at 11:30am and 22nd ranked Uruguay at 6:00pm. 

The winner of this year’s IPAC secured the spot to represent the Americas in the next Indoor World Cup scheduled for Belgium in 2022.
