The government has promised assistance to Kevin Phillips, the owner of the vulcanizing shop at the corner of D’Urban and George streets, Werk-en-Rust which was destroyed in a fire on Thursday last.

Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, Phillips said that some ministries have reached out to him after he made a request for assistance. Phillips, who has said that the losses are in the millions, on Saturday told this newspaper that he was in need of help as the fire had left him without a home and he wanted to rebuild and to start working again.

The business owner is currently staying on D’Urban Street at a friend while his sister who lived with him is at the home of relatives.

The fire, which also destroyed another house and damaged the western side of Elegance Jewellery and Pawn Shop, started around 1 am, allegedly by two men, who were recorded by nearby security cameras. Phillips said that he recognised the two men who entered. He also said that the men helped him to remove items from the fire before they left the scene. He added that they were also customers of his.

This newspaper contacted the Regional Division 4 ‘A’ Police Commander, Simon McBean who said that a joint investigation with the Fire Service is underway and that the Fire Chief would have to be contacted for an update on the investigations. However attempts to contact the Fire Chief were futile.
