First Lady Arya Ali yesterday launched an ‘Adopt-an-Orphanage’ initiative with a view to improving the welfare of vulnerable children.

According to an Office of the First Lady release yesterday, a total of eight orphanages have been ‘adopted’ by corporate sponsors for a minimum of 6-12 months. Through a Memorandum of Understanding, those businesses have committed to providing financial support to these institutions to cover monthly overhead expenses which include but are not limited to utilities and repairs and maintenance. This will be done with oversight from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.

The release stated that the idea was birthed out of a casual conversation with Guyanese-American international recording artiste SAINt JHN several months ago and became a reality yesterday as a result of “meticulous planning, hard work, and sacrifice by a committed team.”

The First Lady noted that implementing such a programme was not easy and is unprecedented in Guyana on such a large scale, adding, “My heart is pleased knowing that our collective effort will significantly improve the welfare of children in vulnerable situations.”

She expressed her gratitude to those who contributed to the success of the initiative particularly the sponsors: Guyana Shore Base Inc, Demerara Bank Limited, Atlantic Ventures Inc, Innovations America, Impressions Branding, JS Guyana Inc, Oasis Café, Anter Narine, and Taslim Baksh, the release added.
