The majority of LGBTQ persons lead safe and clean lifestyles

Dear Editor,

In your edition dated 18th July, 2021, in an article titled “Heart and Sustainability”, Miss Annette Jaundoo is quoted as referring to persons of the LGBTQ community as living “at risk lives”. This is a very troubling statement as it suggests that being LGBTQ is a risk factor. This is completely false. The majority of LGBTQ persons in Guyana and the world lead safe and clean lifestyles that do not pose any risk to the lives of such persons. However, it is the society that contributes that risk through homophobia and other forms of hate. It is this kind of thinking (that being LGBTQ is a risk) that contributes to the negative image and stigma that is pinned on LGBTQ people and ultimately hatred and homophobia. I sincerely hope that we will not see this type of insinuation in future.

Sincerely,

Dillon Mohamed.
