Rawle Lamaison, the man who allegedly stabbed his mother’s tenant to death in the wee hours of Monday morning, was yesterday charged with murder.

Lamaison, 45, a labourer of D’Urban Backlands Squatting Area, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in a city court, where the charge was read against him.

It is alleged that on July 12, 2021, at Middleton Street, Campbellville, Lamaison murdered Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Enforcement Officer Dwayne Daniel Taitt.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until August 12, 2021 for report and disclosure.

The deceased and the accused were known to each other.

According to the police, Taitt, who rented an apartment at the accused mother’s home, on the day in question was awakened by the accused knocking on his door.

Taitt subsequently went to the accused, who immediately asked him when he would vacate the premises.

Taitt responded by stating that he would do so on July 14, when the lease agreement would be up. However, the accused became annoyed and insisted that Taitt vacate the premises immediately.

Taitt then left and returned with a friend, who also pleaded with the accused to stop with his behaviour.

An argument ensued, which caused the accused’s mother and sister to make their way downstairs and ask the men to stop.

It is alleged that Taitt then proceeded to enter his car and the accused pulled out a knife from his waist and dealt him a stab to the left side of his chest.

Taitt was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The accused was later arrested at D’Urban Backlands Squatting Area with the murder weapon in his possession.

The police had previously reported that the altercation occurred just after 12am on Monday when Lamaison woke Taitt and his family by banging on the door of their apartment with a piece of wood, while instructing them to move out.
