Taxi drivers on drug trafficking charge after prison road ganja bust

Two taxi drivers, who the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) say were busted with almost 75 pounds of ganja during an interception along the Lusignan Prison Road, were on Friday charged and remanded to prison.

Glen Gray, 42, of North Ruimvedlt, Georgetown, and Kurt Gittens, 38, a taxi-driver of Aubrey Barker Road, Georgetown, appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.

The particulars of the charge against them states that on July 21, in the vicinity of the Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara, they had 73 pounds (33.2 kilogrammes) of cannabis in their possession.

They were remanded until August 13.

According to CANU, the interception occurred around 2.05 pm on Wednesday.

Gray was the driver at the time, while Gittens was in the passenger seat of the vehicle. CANU said that after the narcotics were found, the men were taken to CANU Headquarters, where further investigations were conducted.
