Suspect arrested in attempted Corentyne home invasion

Police are investigating an alleged attempt to commit a felony on a 63-year-old male of Number Sixty-Three Village, Corentyne on July 16th by four masked men who were armed.  One person has been arrested so far.

Police enquiries have so far revealed that on July 13, the victim’s two daughters had arrived from the United States for a wedding and were staying at his home. About 5pm on July 16, three days later, the man’s daughters left for a maticoor (ceremony for a bride-to-be) at Number Sixty-Nine Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

The victim was during this time babysitting his eight-year-old granddaughter and his neighbour’s ten-year-old daughter. About 8:45 pm he saw four men jump over his fence at the western side. They were wearing facemasks and armed with a long black gun.

An alarm was raised and the gunmen escaped in an unknown direction.

Investigations led to the arrest of a 26-year-old man of Number Sixty-Five Village. When confronted with the allegation, the suspect admitted his involvement. He was taken to the Number Fifty-Five Village Police Station where he gave a written statement which implicated three other men.

Efforts are underway to apprehend the other three suspects who are currently at large.

The arrested suspect remains in police custody.
