Convicted prisoner Quincy Clarke, who escaped from the Lusignan Prison on Saturday morning was recaptured later in the day.

The police said that around 6.50 pm on Saturday, acting on information received,  a party of policemen went to a house at Back Circle, East Ruimveldt where Clarke of Lot 35 West La Penitence was apprehended and taken to the Brickdam Police Station.

He was later uplifted by ranks from the Guyana Prison Service and returned to custody.

Clarke, 38, was only incarcerated at the end of last week to serve four weeks for threatening language. His two four-week sentences were to be served concurrently. He faces a lengthier sentence for escaping.

According to a police report, enquiries revealed that two ranks were performing duties at one of the Lusignan prison’s holding bay on Saturday morning when they noticed a male running and pushing an XR motorcycle.

The officers, the report said, shouted at the male to stop but he didn’t. As a result, a chase ensued during which Clarke dropped the motorcycle and escaped.

The ranks, the report added, later learnt that the individual they were chasing was a prisoner and the motorcycle belonged to a prison officer.
