Magistrate lets homeless purse thief do community service

A homeless man yesterday asked to do community service instead of serving time in jail after admitting to stealing a woman’s purse.

Paul Patterson, who is homeless, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday when Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan ordered him to serve 100 hours of community service.

He pleaded guilty to the charge which states that on July 30, at High Street, Georgetown, he stole a handbag valued $10,000 from Sheila Persaud.

After his confession, he told the court that he would like to do community work rather than be placed behind bars. The Magistrate concurred and ordered him to follow through with 100 hours of community service.
