Boy, 6, drowns in mining camp reservoir

A six-year-old drowned on Wednesday at Tiger Creek Backdam, in Region Eight.

Dwayne Jacobis, called ‘Junior,’ who was a resident of 118 A Wismar Housing Scheme, Linden, was in the care of his grandmother when he drowned sometime between 11.30 am and 12.30 pm on Wednesday.

According to the police, the grandmother, employed as a cook with Adrian John Mining Operation, was preparing lunch for the workers when she realised that the child was missing.

She immediately made checks around the camp and subsequently raised an alarm.

The police added that a search team was formed and during a search the child’s slippers were seen floating in a reservoir pond, where the miners access water, about 30 feet away from the kitchen.

A pork knocker thereafter jumped into the 10-ft-deep reservoir and eventually brought up the child’s lifeless body.

Jacobis was rushed to the Mahdia District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body of the deceased is presently lying at the Mahdia Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
