Police on Thursday detained a number of motorcyclists and pedal cyclists, who were found in breach of various traffic offences.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the exercise was aimed at tackling breaches of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Regulations committed by motor and pedal cyclists.

Ranks of the Traffic Department carried out the two-hour operation around Georgetown around 1pm on Thursday. Those found in breach of the regulations were escorted to Traffic Headquarters, at Eve Leary.

The police explained that as of July 10 this year, there has been a 32% decrease in fatal accidents and a 30% decrease in fatalities when compared to the same period last year.

Pedestrians and motorcyclists, the police said, have been the major categories of road users who have lost their lives on the roadways. Inattentiveness and speeding were cited as the main causes of those accidents.
