Here’s a toast to Demerara Rum

Dear Editor,

With reference to the announcement in Stabroek News of DDL’s ‘Demerara Rum’ gaining ‘Key EU Recognition’, I recall some time in the early 1970s when in London with my Fijian colleague, Prince Droonamisimisi, at the end of working day in the heart of the business district, visited the nearby pub. As we searched the shelves for what we could mutually savour, we came across a bottle branded ‘Demerara Rum’ on the top shelf. Its history seemed to have caused it to be the most expensive drink in the bar. I recall how proud I was at coming from such a higher valued background. But I am sure that fellow shareholders are familiar with the historical fact of Demerara Rum being centuries ago the choice of the British Navy. Here’s a toast to its historical quality being again officially recognised in Europe.

Sincerely,

E.B. John
