Cedric Hopkinson, the man who was killed three Thursdays ago by fleeing bandits following a robbery at a Superbet outlet at Orange Walk and Bourda was said to be a popular artisan who crafted leather and jewellery and plied his trade outside of the Shamdas Kirpalani Store on Regent Street.

According to police, the 41-year-old deceased was headed to a nearby shop on August 5th to make a purchase at about 9pm, the same time the Superbet business was being robbed by two men, when he was shot.

Sources had told this newspaper that the armed bandits had carried out the robbery and while escaping, they discharged rounds, one of which struck Hopkinson in his chest. He succumbed later that night while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Stella Grenion, aunt of the deceased who lives in another building in the same yard where Hopkinson resided said she was in her house when she heard her nephew moving “stuff” into his home, his usual thing to do whenever he gets home from work. The woman said she heard him leaving minutes to eight that night shortly after arriving at home and recalls grumbling to herself why it was that Hopkinson couldn’t stay at home whenever he get in from work instead of heading back out.

“I was in bed about 9:30/10, when my brother called me on the phone and said Cedric get shot and I said ‘What, well I ain’t believe that’ then a friend called and said, Cedric so, so, so. He tell me they took Cedric to the hospital then he said ‘All I got is his phone, his watch and charger’ which they gave him at the hospital but on to now, he ain’t bring the things them,” recounted Grenion.

“Cedric was always outgoing, always drinking, laughing,” Grenion said.

Hopkinson’s funeral is today at Merriman Funeral Home. He leaves to mourn six children among other relatives and friends.

According to police, the suspects remain at large. Investigations are ongoing.
