The Ministry of Labour is probing the death of a chainsaw operator, Winston Meredith on August 17 on a logging concession.

In a statement yesterday, it said that on August 25th, 2021 the Ministry’s Senior Occupational Safety and Health Officer,  Maxean Bess; Forest Ranger,  Keilon Sullivan and Police Constable, Simean Alder visited and conducted an accident investigation at a logging concession owned by Samantha Brown in Linden-Ituni, First Savan-nah, Tacama Road.

The accident which occurred on August 17, 2021, at approximately 10 am resulted in the death of  Meredith, 48,  who had been employed with the company for over a year.

The investigations so far have revealed that on the day of the accident Meredith and three other workers were engaged in the felling of trees. The vines from a tree being felled became entangled with another tree which caused it to crash down, hitting Meredith on his head and leaving him pinned to the ground.

The tree that was felled is commonly known as a Wamara tree which is approximately 40 to 60 feet in length.

The Ministry said that the investigation into the accident is continuing.
