A Berbice policeman is now hospitalized in a stable condition after he slammed into a motor lorry around 2 pm on Tuesday along the Upper Corentyne Public Road.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Shree Laljit, 41, of Lot 109 Section ‘B’ Number 72 Village, Corentyne, was proceeding in motor car PYY 3137 while a Massy Distribution mo-tor lorry, GKK 2444 was being driven by Roshan Jafarally, 22, of Lot 3-4 Strand, New Amsterdam at the time of the accident.

According to the Guy-ana Police Force, Laljit’s vehicle had an occupant, Bishwine Edwin, 32, a member of a Community Police Group, of Lot 54 Line Path, Corriverton, in his vehicle while he was proceeding north along the western side of the Spring-lands Public Road and the motor lorry was proceeding east out of the Springlands Police Station compound.

It is alleged by the driver (Laljit) that his foot slipped off the brakes pedal and onto the accelerator causing the motorcar to collide with the motor lorry.

As a result of the collision, Laljit and Edwin suffered  injuries and were taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital, where Edwin was treated and sent away, while Laljit was admitted in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, the force’s statement yesterday also added that the motor lorry driver was in custody and notices of intended prosecution have been served on both drivers.
