Good Hope salesman held over staged robbery

A 35-year-old salesman is now in police custody after allegedly staging a robbery on Friday morning to avoid having to repay monies he allegedly stole from the company to offset medical treatment for this ailing mother.

According to the police, Mulchan Lall, a resident of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was arrested after he admitted to conspiring with others to stage the robbery.

The robbery occurred around 8.30 am at Kuru Kuru, Linden-Soesdyke Highway.

A police report said  that Lall and a co-worker, Ravin Hardeo, 20 of Coldingen, ECD, who works as a porter were in Kuru Kuru selling items in minibus, GMM 7768.

The duo works with Singh’s Confectionary. The minibus belongs to the company.

As they were coming out of the area, police said that a suspect, who was armed with a handgun allegedly approached the minibus, pulled the door and jumped inside.

According to the police, the suspect brandished the handgun and demanded that the duo hand over cash.

However, police said Lall reportedly told the suspect that they didn’t have any money. As such, the suspect instructed him to drive to Pandama road.

Upon arrival, Lall and Hardeo were taken out of the minibus and relieved of their valuables; a cellular phone, $30,000 cash and one silver chain.

The police added that the suspect tied Hardeo’s hands and ordered Lall to lie on the ground. He then set the minibus on fire and made good his escape.

Lall reported the matter to the Timehri Police station.

An investigation was launched during which Lall was questioned. He reportedly told investigators that his mother, who is overseas is sick and needed money to undergo several surgeries.

As a result, Lall reportedly said he converted the money from the goods he sold which amounted to over $1M to his own use. Thereafter, he said he had no means of repaying and the company was trying to get him to balance his stock.

As such, he added that he conspired with other persons stage the robbery and to burn the company vehicle.

Lall was taken into custody and is expected to be charged soon.
