Nine persons lost their home on Sunday in a fire of unknown origin at Mocha, East Bank Demerara.

The fire destroyed the upper half of the family’s Lot 8 Carol’s Place, Mocha home.

It started around 7 pm in a back room of the upper flat of the two-storey building.

Siani Gilbert, 22, who was one of the occupants of the home, was not there when the fire started.

However, after observing smoke from nearby, Gilbert said she called her mother to inquire about the where it was coming from. The woman said she was shocked to learn that it was her own home on fire.

She explained that neighbours immediately assisted, quickly forming a bucket brigade to help put out the fire. The fire service is said to have arrived about 20 minutes after the fire started.

While Gilbert could not estimate their losses, she stated that it was significant. When this newspaper visited the site on Monday, workers were seen clearing the debris.

Members of Gilbert’s family are now residing with other relatives until they can rebuild their home.
