West Indies Women’s team vice-captain, Deandra Dottin, believes it was a misfiring batting attack that led to the loss in the first One Day International against South Africa Women on Tuesday.

The hosts, West Indies Women, were bowled out for 153 which South Africa Women easily chased with seven wickets in hand and more than 10 overs to spare.

According to Dottin who was speaking at the post match interview, “I don’t think we played our best cricket today in terms of batting. I think the top order at least somebody should have batted through and stayed there, I just think we were short of partnerships. I think 150 we were a bit short.”

The Caribbean ladies were reduced to 12 for two with both openers back in the dugout but apart from Kycia Knight (39), Dottin (38) and Britney Cooper who retired not out on 25, no other batter reached double figures.

Speaking on her innings, Dottin related, “My batting plan was to bat deep after losing two quick wickets. As a senior player, I thought I should have got myself in, see how the pitch was playing and then go as deep as I can.”

She had shared in a 58-run partnership with Cooper but no other partnership went beyond 18.

The 30-year-old reflected on the conditions, stating, “It was really hot today. It was a little bit difficult. You had to keep hydrating and dig deep in order to climb out the hole…”

Looking ahead, the all-rounder indicated, “We need to go back to the drawing board and come up with ways to score 200 which I know we have the ability to do.”

Dottin assured that the hosts will go back to the drawing board with the aim of reflecting on what went wrong and focusing on the basics as they look to put their best foot forward in the second match which is set for tomorrow.
