No bail for accused in robbery of Buxtonians, taxi driver

A man was yesterday charged with six counts of armed robbery committed on six persons.

Twenty-three-year-old Calvin Cumberbatch, a labourer of Lot 63 Cow Dam, New Amsterdam, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded to prison until October 27, 2021 for report at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.

Cumberbatch is accused of robbing five Buxtonians and a taxi driver.

Police had reported that five Buxtonians were on Tuesday night robbed at an Ital shop at Annandale Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara, by a gang of armed men and a female accomplice.

The robbery occurred at around 10.20 pm while the victims were at the shop watching television and playing cards. 

According to the Guyana Police Force, the victims were approached by the suspects – six males and the female – who held them at gunpoint and subsequently relieved them of their personal belongings.

A 28-year-old man was relieved of a Samsung Galaxy 8 plus, valued $70,000, while another was robbed of one iPhone valued $70,000. A third victim was relieved of a 13 pennyweight gold chain, valued $70,000, while a fourth victim was robbed of one cellphone and a 12 pennyweight gold chain valued $70,000. A fifth victim was relieved of a Samsung cellphone valued $23,000, and wallet valued $2,000 containing one ID card, and $16,500 cash.
