Man remanded over Aremu Backdam gun incident

A man who is accused of discharging a firearm at Aremu Backdam on Saturday was remanded to prison after making his appearance before the court on Tuesday.

The accused Raymond Persaud, appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was subsequently remanded to prison until October 15, 2021.

The firearm found

According to the police, ranks visited a shop owner at Aremu Landing who led them to two live 9mm rounds of ammunition and fifteen 9mm spent shells about the environs of her shop. 

As the investigation continued police discovered another camp where the suspect was contacted and told of the allegations. 

The hammock in which the suspect was reclining was also searched and a 9mm Taurus pistol with the serial number filed off was found. Two magazines, one live 9mm round and two live .32 rounds were also found. 

Additionally, a storage box that was found in the kitchen area was also searched and ten 12-gauge cartridges were unearthed. 

The suspect was told of the offence committed, cautioned, and arrested.

The ammunition and firearm were lodged at the Bartica Police Station.
