Juveniles apprehended after fleeing Sophia centre

A quick response by the police has led to the apprehension of four juveniles who escaped from the Sophia Holding Centre yesterday morning.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the escape occurred around 2.45 am.

The juveniles were housed in cells 3 and 4 of the Holding Centre. They were in custody for armed robbery, manslaughter and murder.

According to the police, ranks on duty heard a loud noise. Upon checking, they noticed the juveniles running in a western direction. One of the ranks, the police said gave chase but the juveniles managed to make their way to Pike Street, Campbellville.

A patrol was immediately alerted and within an hour, the juveniles were apprehended on Delhi Street, Prashad Nagar and taken to the Brickdam Police Station.

According to the police, the juveniles escaped by breaking the padlocks from the cell doors and removing several pieces of wood from the ceiling.

Two broken padlocks and parts of steel rods, which are suspected to have been used in the escape were found at the scene.
