Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance Dr Ashni Singh on Wednesday evening signed an agreement with India for the acquisition of 30,000 Solar Home Lighting Systems for  hinterland communities here.

According to a release on the Facebook page of the Ministry of Finance, the signing of the agreement, was part of the 57th anniversary celebration of Indian Technical Economic Cooperation (ITEC) day at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre.

The total cost of the project is estimated at US$7.2 million and the economic benefits to be accrued as a result of the intervention include the diversification of the energy supply and the reduction of Guyana’s dependence on imported fossil fuel which contributes greenhouse gas emissions.

The release said that the signing of the agreement is in keeping with the promise made in the PPP/C’s Manifesto 2020 which states that “Government will invest in solar and wind systems for off-grid areas” as well as “developing micro-grids for large hinterland villages”.

Also present at the event and delivering remarks were Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand and Minister of Public Service, Sonia Parag.
