Islington girl, 9, killed in accident

A nine-year-old girl is now dead after being struck by a car along the Islington Public Road on Friday morning.

Dead is Carleisa Lewis, 9, of Islington Village, East Bank Berbice.

According to the Guyana Police Force, Anthony Persaud, of Glasgow Village, East Bank Berbice, was driving along the Islington Public Road in motor vehicle PJJ 2394 just around 9 am. He has alleged that the child ran from east to west into the path of his vehicle.

As a result of the impact, Lewis fell to the road surface. She received injuries to her head and other parts of her body.

She was picked up in an unconscious state and was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Her body is presently at the New Amsterdam Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The police said that a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver and it showed no alcohol in his breath. However, as of yesterday afternoon he remained in custody.
