Youth gets bail on larceny charge after victim requests case be dismissed

A youth was released on $50,000 bail after a City Magistrate heard that he has agreed to fix the damage caused to a laptop he allegedly stole.

Twenty-year-old Dominique Butts was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who granted him bail for a larceny charge.

It is alleged that on September 23, 2021, at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Butts stole a laptop valued at $165,000 and $65,000 cash from Marlon Parris.

Butts pleaded not guilty to the charge moments before the police prosecutor, Christopher Morris, told the court that Parris had indicated he wished to have the matter dismissed. Parris explained to the court that Butts’s aunt had offered to pay for the damage caused to the stolen laptop.

The court was told that on the day in question, Butts went to the same pharmacy where Parris had left his laptop and cash on the counter. According to eyewitnesses, Butts was seen leaving with the items.

The Magistrate placed Butts on $50,000 bail and the matter was adjourned until October 6.
