Pfizer vaccine to be issued to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers – Anthony

The Minister of Health yesterday stated that the administration of the Pfizer vaccine has been extended to cover pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

This disclosure was made during Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony’s daily COVID-19 update where he stated that the beneficiaries of the vaccine have been extended recently to that category of persons. This comes as some 100,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine are expected here.

It was previously announced that the vaccines which are arriving via the COVAX facility, were expected here on Monday, however, Dr Anthony explained yesterday that there was a mix up in the dates and as such those vaccines will be here later in the week.

Further, Anthony informed that apart from those persons ages 12 to 18, the Pfizer administration was extended to pregnant women and those breastfeeding from last week. “We have now extended the persons who would be eligible for the Pfizer vaccine, that includes pregnant women and breastfeeding women so we have been rolling that out now for the past week,” adding that he expects more persons will come forward to receive same.

When the health minister was asked whether this vaccine will be extended to cover the general adult population as well, he responded that the ministry has not yet made a decision on that and only the recent expansion was decided upon. He noted that the expectation is that the United States Food and Drug Administration will approve the use of the Pfizer vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 and when that is done, local authorities will be able to extend vaccinations to that age group as well.
