The US Embassy George-town on Tuesday announced funding of US$24,897 ($5.2m) to Voices GY, a local non-profit organization providing support to migrants and their host communities in Guyana, to engage leaders of vulnerable migrant groups and returning Guyanese in Regions 3 and 4.
A release from the embassy said that the support is under the aegis of the Julia Taft Refugee Fund, an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, to fill gaps in assistance for refugee and migrant protection.
Under the grant, the release said that Voices GY will organize a 12-week course to teach communications and community organizing skills, and provide information on available social services, legal protections, access to housing, medical assistance, and education.
The programme will also see a migration-focus-ed guide for civil society organizations and government officials to help inform participative decision making.
