The vast majority of recent COVID-19 deaths have been of unvaccinated persons.

This can be seen in data which Stabroek News culled from the daily releases by the Ministry of Health. The ministry from September 13, 2021 began making  public the vaccination status of the persons who had died. With a total of 159 deaths being reported from that date to yesterday, some 81.2% of those were shown to be of unvaccinated persons.

That 81.2% accounts for 129 persons. Fifteen persons making up 9.5% of the deaths reported were persons who were partially vaccinated. Nine persons who died were fully vaccinated, accounting for 5.6% of the total deaths. A further 3.7% of the deaths –  six persons – fell into the category of  those persons whose vaccination status was unknown.

The Ministry of Health has been on an aggressive campaign to fully inoculate Guyana’s eligible population and has procured vaccines to cover a large amount of the population. As of October 8, 2021 some 366,190 adults have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine while some 220,017 adults have received a second dose.
