An early morning fire on a vessel that was caused by overheating has been contained.

This was disclosed by the Guyana Fire Service in a press release which stated that a call was received around 3:31 am which alerted the service to a fire on board a vessel at the Gafoors Complex at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara. As a result water tenders from the Diamond and Timehri Fire Stations responded to the report.

The vessel, Sydney Marie, was used to transport aggregate and is owned by Odin’s Trading of St Vincent. At the time of the incident it was captained by a St Vincent national, 56-year-old Richard Bynoe.

It has been determined that the fire was caused by an overheating generator which caused sparking and arcing, the release stated.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire as firefighters were able to contain the fire to the generator room.
