Three die in fuel boat fire

Three men are now dead after a boat used to transport fuel burst into flames while they were doing maintenance work at the Friendship Wharf, on the East Bank of Demerara, yesterday afternoon.

Dead are Seenarine Persaud, Mark Mangal and Damon Denia.

Their deaths were confirmed by Commander of Division 4(B) Mahendra Siwnarine, who last night said an investigation had so far determined that the tanker exploded sometime between 4.40 pm and 5.30 pm.

Siwnarine told Sunday Stabroek that the vessel was docked at the wharf, where the three men were doing some minor maintenance work.  He noted that at that time no fuel was on board the vessel.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Fire Officer at Guyana Fire Service Gregory Wickham said firefighters received reports of the fire and rushed to the scene, where they found the three lifeless bodies. He stated last night that the investigation into what caused the fire is still ongoing.

Investigators were still at the scene up to press time.

Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Deodat Indar disclosed that the boat, called ‘Canada Club,’ was docked since 9 yesterday morning.

The vessel is owned by a businessman from Region Three.
