Sophia woman dies in accident on Eccles road

A woman has died following an accident on the Eccles Industrial Site access road, East Bank Demerara.

According to a Guyana Police Force report, the woman who has been identified as 37-year-old Roxanne Daniels of Sophia, lost her life in an accident that occurred yesterday at about 3:40 in the afternoon and involved a motor lorry and a motor cycle.

The motor lorry, GAB 332, is reportedly owned by RK Concrete Guyana Incorporated of Lot 236 South Road, Lacytown, Georgetown, and driven at the time of the accident by 41-year-old Renaldo Ruiz, of Eccles new housing scheme, EBD. The motor cycle, CJ 4871, is owned and was driven by 48-year-old Maxwell Thomas, of Lot 1541 Onderneeming, West Bank Demerara.

Police investigations revealed that the motor lorry was reversing from west going east on the southern side of the said road when the rear portion of the lorry collided with the motorcycle which was proceeding west along the southern side of the said road.

As a result of the collision, the motor cyclist along with pillion rider, Daniels, fell onto the road and suffered injuries about their bodies.

Both persons were picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Diamond Hospital where Daniels, was pronounced dead on arrival.

The motorcyclist was treated and referred to the Georgetown Public Hospi-tal where he was admitted suffering from a fractured right leg and other injuries. His condition is regarded as critical.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the lorry driver and no trace of alcohol was detected.

The body of the deceased is presently at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting a post mortem.

The driver is currently in custody as investigations continue.
