A man who was allegedly held by Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) ranks with 44.5 grammes of cannabis was yesterday charged and granted bail.

Warren Broomes, 33, of Lot K7 Edun Street, Tucville Housing Scheme, was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in a city court, where he was granted his release on $100,000 bail.

He denied that on October 22, at Macaw Road and Arapaima Street, Tucville, in the vicinity of Turning Point Sports club, he had 44.5 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

He was represented by attorneys Dexter Smart and Paul Fung-A-Fat. The latter told the court that his client was at a fruit stand owned by a Rastafarian and that the ranks arrested him after finding the cannabis at the stand, although the police claimed it was found in the crotch of his pants. He added that his client did not make any statements admitting to ownership and he maintained that the man was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

According to a CANU release, Broomes was arrested after CANU ranks, who were conducting operations at the location mentioned, searched the man and found a quantity of zip-lock bags containing cannabis in his pants pocket. However, Police Prosecutor Annalisa Brummell told the court that the man had the cannabis in the crotch of his pants. Prosecutor Brummell did not object to bail but asked that conditions be attached. Broomes was released on $100,000 bail with the condition that he reports to the CANU Headquarters every Friday at 9 am. The matter was adjourned until November 22.
