Man says ‘jumbie’ made him break windows

A man was yesterday sentenced to one month in jail for damaging the windows of another man’s home after he claimed a “jumbie” made him do it.

Cleveland Allen, 40, who is unemployed, was arraigned in a city court, where Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the charge to him. It is alleged that on October 22, at Lamaha Park, Georgetown, he damaged 14 sash windows, valued $56,000, which were the property of Earl Price.

Allen pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court heard that Price and Allen know each other. The Police Prosecutor said that Price had left his home secured and at about 16:00 hrs he received a call about Allen damaging his windows. He then called the police and Allen was arrested.

Allen told the court that he would pay for the windows to be fixed. But the Magistrate asked how he would do so given that he was unemployed. The man said that he does mason work but wasn’t working at the moment. He further said that “a jumbie hold on on me,” when he was asked why he damaged the windows.

He was then sentenced to one month behind bars.
