A cyclist is now dead after he was struck by a car along the Vryheid’s Lust Public Road, on the East Coast of Demerara, on Monday night.

According to the Guy-ana Police Force, the driver who struck Ramesh Jaikaram, 27, of Lot 81 Thyman Street, Better Hope North, East Coast Demerara, says the now dead man rode into the path of his vehicle.

In a statement, the police said Jermin Ross, 24, of Lot 15 Cottage Village, West Coast Berbice, had proceeding west along the Vryheid’s Lust Public Road at about 70 kilometres per hour at the time of the accident occurred.

He has said that as he approached a traffic light, it was showing green but while he proceeded on his way Jaikaram, who had been waiting to cross the road, rode into the path of his vehicle.

Ross told investigators that he swerved south to avoid an impact but despite his efforts the right side-view mirror of his vehicle connected with Jaikaram, who fell to the road.

The police noted that another driver, Jonathan Rasulbaksh, 22, of Lot 31 Second Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Deme-rara, who was proceeding behind Ross, reported that he saw the other driver swerve south and collide with the cyclist. As a result, he, too, swerved south to avoid hitting the car and cyclist.

Jaikaram was picked up and taken to the George-town Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Both drivers were placed in custody pending investigations. The police noted that the subsequent  breathalyser tests uncovered no alcohol in their breath.
