Anthony reports decline in COVID-19 cases

Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony on Tuesday announced that authorities have noticed a recent decline in COVID-19 cases across the country.

During his daily COVID-19 update, Anthony stated that although there are areas that can be considered hotspots, generally there has been a decrease. “We have noticed a trend where there has been a decline in cases across the country. So right now, we have 2,673 active cases and the cases vary by regions, so the regions where I would consider that we have hotspots I would say really are Region Three, Region Four we also have in Region Eight and Region Ten,” the minister said.

Anthony noted that as a result of the country recording fewer cases, there has also been a decrease in the hospitalisation rates. He reported that up to yesterday morning there were a total of 60 persons in hospitals across the country and of that number 35 persons were at the Ocean View hospital.

“This is a drastic change from what we had a couple weeks ago when we were seeing about 120 cases at Ocean View. That is now down to 35,” Anthony said.

Of the 60 persons hospitalised, he mentioned that three of those persons are pregnant mothers.

With the decrease in hospitalisations for the severe cases, the country’s COVID-19 death rate is also going down, which Anthony noted was a very important sign even as he added that the country’s mortality rate currently stands at 12.2%. He iterated that they hope that in the coming weeks they will see this number decrease further.

Meanwhile as it related to the hotspots, Anthony reported that there are currently over 400 cases spread across areas In Region Three, including Tuschen, La Parfaite Harmonie, Pouderoyen, Parika, Crane, Zeelugt, Cornelia Ida, Hague and Vreed-en-Hoop.

In Region Four, on the East Bank of Demerara, Anthony revealed that there are 115 cases spread across the Diamond, Grove and Herstelling communities, while in Georgetown there are 129 cases distributed in Sophia, Kitty, Campbellville and Cummings Lodge. How-ever on the East Coast of Demerara, there are lower cases with 65 cases in hotspot areas such as Enterprise, Mon Repos, Triumph and Lusignan.

Anthony also reported that an increase in cases has been observed in Mahdia, in Region Eight, which now has 32 cases, and at Wismar, 56 cases, Amelia’s Ward, 37 cases, and Mackenzie, 17 cases, in Region Ten. “These are generally the places where we have seen cases so I want to make the point that across the country we have started seeing that decline in cases,” he said.
