A probe has been launched into the death of a Corentyne man, who was found hanging in the Springlands police lock up yesterday afternoon, one day before he was expected to appear in court for allegedly threatening his wife and three-year-old daughter.

The deceased is Chattergoon Sookoo, also known as ‘Boy’, 51, of Number 77 Housing Scheme, Corentyne, Berbice, who police say was found hanging from the door of his cell around 14:50 hrs.

The Commander of Region Six, Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan, confirmed that the man was found hanging. He said the police arrested him after his wife reported that he had threatened to kill her and their daughter.

He added that investigators were finalising the documents to have the man appear in court today.

In a brief statement, the Guyana Police Force confirmed that an investigation is underway into the man’s death. It noted that he had been arrested and placed in the lock up at about 13:00 hrs on Monday, following the report of abuse and threatening behaviour made against him by his wife.
