Bogus meter readers held after failed bid to rob Covent Garden woman

Two men are now due to face charges after they posed as Guyana Power and Light (GPL) workers and attempted to rob a housewife at Covent Garden, on the East Bank of Demerara on Monday.

The police said in a press release that around midday the perpetrators approach-ed the 56-year-old woman, who was washing clothes in her back yard, identified themselves as GPL meter readers and asked to read the meter.

According to the release, the woman allowed them onto her premises and located the meter for them. However, she was suddenly grabbed by one of the men, who demanded that she hand over all her money while forcing her up her stairs.

The housewife quickly shouted “thief” and the men let go of her immediately and walked out the yard.

It was reported by the police that within seconds, residents of the area came to her assistance and she quickly identified the perpetrators who were walking towards the public road. A Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) officer, a police constable of the Providence Police Station’s Traffic Department and public-spirited citizens apprehended one of the men, who was identified as a 25-year-old porter.

According to the release, police ranks quickly responded and were able to apprehend the other man, a 20-year-old, who was found hiding in the storeroom of an apartment complex located in the area.
