Attempted robbers pretended to be meter readers – court hears

The two men who allegedly pretended to be meter readers of Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL), and attempted to rob a woman were on Friday remanded to prison.

Jose Fraser, of Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and Jaleel Thomas of Cinema Street, Diamond, East Bank Demerara,  appeared at the Diamond/ Grove Magistrate’s Court where they were jointly charged with attempting to commit a robbery.

The two men denied the charge and were remanded until January 3.

Stabroek News had reported that the two men posed as GPL  workers and attempted to rob a housewife at Covent Garden on the EBD on November 1. The police in a press release said that around midday the perpetrators approached the 56-year-old woman, who was washing clothes in her backyard, identified themselves as GPL meter readers and asked to read the meter.

According to the release, the woman allowed them onto her premises and located the meter for them. However, one of them grabbed her and demanded that she hand over all her money while forcing her up her stairs. She alerted her neighbours by shouting out and residents of the area came to her assistance. A Guyana Revenue Authority officer, a police constable of the Providence Police Station’s Traffic Department and public-spirited citizens apprehended Fraser. Thomas was later arrested after he was found hiding in the storeroom of an apartment complex located in the area.
