A man was fatally stabbed after an argument over an old grievance ended in a knife fight on Thursday night at Pepper Hill, Mocha, East Bank Demerara.

The dead man has been identified as Paul Braithwaite, of Lot 6 Barnwell North, Mocha.

The stabbing occurred around 23.30 hrs.

Police yesterday confirmed that the 31-year-old assailant was arrested and is presently in police custody assisting with the investigation.

Braithwaite and his assailant are reportedly known to each other. The two men were friends up last year when they had a misunderstanding over a woman. Since then, they would often get into frequent arguments.

In a statement yesterday, police said enquiries disclosed that Braithwaite and the man were liming at Arcadia Street, Mocha, when they encountered each other and a heated argument erupted.

During the argument, the police said both men brandished knives and stabbed each other several times about their bodies.

As Braithwaite was fleeing the scene, the police said, he collapsed on the road.

His assailant ran to the Mocha Police Outpost, where he reported the stabbing.

He was arrested and escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was treated.

The police who responded to the assailant’s report discovered Braithwaite with several suspected stab wounds about his body. He was escorted to the said hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
