A man was on Monday remanded after being charged with manslaughter following the death of a Mocha, East Bank man who was involved in a knife fight with him.

Marlon Clarke was taken before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Grove Magis-trate’s Court where he was not required to plead to the manslaughter charge. He was remanded until January 3.

According a Police report, the man was stabbed after an argument over an old grievance ended in a knife fight on November 4 at Pepper Hill, Mocha, East Bank Demerara. The dead man has been identified as Paul Braithwaite, of Lot 6 Barnwell North, Mocha. The police said that the stabbing occurred around 23.30 hrs.

It is alleged that the two men were friends up to until last year when they had a misunderstanding over a woman. Since then, they would often get into frequent arguments. In a statement yesterday, the  police said enquiries disclosed that Braithwaite and Clarke were liming at Arcadia Street, Mocha, when they encountered each other and a heated argument erupted.

During the argument, the police said both men brandished knives and stabbed each other several times about their bodies. As Braithwaite was fleeing the scene, the police said, he collapsed on the road. While Clarke managed to run to the Mocha Police Outpost, where he reported the stabbing. He was arrested and escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was treated.

The police who responded to the assailant’s report discovered Braithwaite with several suspected stab wounds about his body. He was escorted to the said hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
