The presence of such a major corporation is a genuine signal that Guyana is open for investment

Dear Editor,

It was very positive to see representatives from the American construction firm Bechtel meeting with senior ministers this week. The name may not be familiar to many of us, but Bechtel is one of highly regarded companies in America, with a history going back over 100 years in undertaking very large and complex infrastructural projects. This include their participation in the consortium that built the Hoover Dam in the 1930s, an enormous project that completely transformed the American southwest and California by taming the Colorado River and providing hydroelectric power.

Bechtel has gone on to do many other projects including the San Francisco rapid transit system and Boston’s Central Artery. Around the world they built the 50km undersea Channel Tunnel connecting the UK and France, and most recently a highway in Albania. There is no doubting the quality of their work, and one can only hope that the administration would seriously consider them for some significant projects here. Not cheap but you get what you pay for and execution is everything. Additionally, the presence of such a major American corporation operating here would send a strong signal that Guyana is genuinely open for investment.

Sincerely,

A. Singh
