A man who denied stealing a car valued at  $1.3 million has been released on $550,000 bail.

Nineteen-year-old Justin DeSantos of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where Magistrate Dylon Bess granted him bail. He denied that on October 23, 2021, at East Ruimveldt, Georgetown he stole the car valued at $1.3 million, property of Campion Chichester.

The Police Prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds of the serious nature of the offence and the penalty it attracts. Further, the prosecutor said that the man gave conflicting addresses to the police. It was also disclosed that DeSantos is currently under investigation at the Turkeyen Police Station for seven simple larceny matters.

In addition, in 2019, the man along with three others, were charged with a series of offences. It was reported that they had allegedly stolen vehicles in a carjacking ring at Kuru Kururu, Linden/Soesdyke Highway.

DeSantos was released on $550,000 bail on the condition that he lodges his passport at the court and reports every Friday at the Diamond/Grove Police Station. The matter was adjourned until January 13.
