A man found at a marijuana camp was yesterday charged with trafficking in narcotics and the cultivation of prohibited plants.

Twenty-three-year-old Shafeer Sanichar was arraigned at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court where he was read the two charges by Magistrate Fabayo Azore. He denied both charges and was remanded until January 11.

After entering his pleas, Sanichar told the court that he was beaten by  ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) who arrested him.

It was reported that Sanichar was arrested on Friday after CANU found him at a marijuana camp in St. Cuthbert’s Mission.  A press release from CANU said that 3,000 cannabis plants were found on 2.5 acres of land. These plants ranged from three to six feet in height. Further, CANU said that processed cannabis and a quantity of seeds were also found. Sanichar was under a makeshift tent processing cannabis plants at one of the fields, the release said.
