Police to probe shooting of suspect at South Amelia’s Ward

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has commenced a probe into a shooting at South Amelia’s Ward, Linden which landed a man in the Linden hospital.

According to a GPF release, ranks of the Police Office of Professional Responsibility are currently conducting an investigation into a shooting incident which occurred on December 01. It involved 36-year-old Marlon Brewster, who was shot by the police during efforts to arrest him.

The release stated that two uniformed police ranks responded to a report of an alleged simple larceny of a generator and Brewster was reported to be a suspect.  The police visited the man’s residence and informed him of the allegation. However, in response, Brewster began to verbally threaten the ranks. He then allegedly armed himself with a cutlass and attacked the ranks. The ranks subsequently retreated and sought assistance.

Ranks of a Divisional Anti-Crime Patrol responded and

managed to relieve Brewster of the cutlass, but he continued to verbally abuse and threaten the ranks. It was also alleged that he threw beer at the ranks. It was reported that Brewster was shot to his body after he broke two bottles and attacked one of the ranks. The injured man then escaped but was later found after being admitted at the Linden Hospital Complex where he is currently under guard.

In addition, the shop located on Brewster’s premises was searched and the stolen generator was found. Two brush-cutter machines and a stereo speaker that were suspected to be stolen or unlawfully obtained, 115 grams of marijuana, and a utensil used for smoking marijuana were also found.
