Homeless labourer remanded over $1.8M Bourda stall break-in

A homeless labourer has been remanded to prison after a city court heard that he broke and entered a stall and stole cash and articles totalling over $1.8 million.

Gopaul Ramjattan, 27, who said he lives on the streets, was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Wednesday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He denied that between May 10 and May 11, at Orange Walk, Bourda, while in the company of others, he broke and entered the stall of Marvin Charles and stole $1, 812,000 in cash as well as a quantity of cigars, cigarettes, lighters and rolling papers amounting to $50,000 in value.

According to the Police Prosecutor, Charles secured his stall with the articles. The police said that he later discovered that the items were missing. He then made some enquiries and discovered that Travis Caesar had received the items from Ramjattan. Some items were recovered but the money was not.

The Prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence and the likelihood that the man may not return to court if granted bail. As a result, the Magistrate remanded Ramjattan and the matter was transferred to Courts 8 & 9 for trial.
