Montrose man drowns while showing children how to swim – police

A Montrose, East Coast Demerara (ECD) man is suspected to have drowned on Wednesday afternoon while he was showing children how to swim.

Dead is Solomon Sookram, 33, of Lot 6 Montrose Railway Embankment, ECD.

The Guyana Police Force, in a report, said the incident occurred sometime between 14.00hrs and 16.00hrs at Felicity Railway Embankment, ECD.

The police said Sookram would normally journey to Felicity, ECD to cut grass for his father’s cattle. Before cutting the grass, he would consume alcohol.

According to the police report, Sookram went to Felicity, ECD on Wednesday afternoon while he was intoxicated and he took off his clothing before he swam across a canal to cut grass.

“He began showing the children in the yard how to swim and he plunged and went under and did not resurface for about five minutes,” the report said.

An alarm was raised by a neighbour and Sookram’s family went to the canal to search for him.

While his body was retrieved, efforts to resuscitate him were futile.

The police were summoned and Sookram was pronounced dead at the scene.  His body was escorted to Memorial Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy.
