North West District miner killed in row over money

A North West District miner was killed on Saturday night after being involved in a scuffle over money owed to an employee.

The deceased man has been identified as Victor Pedro, 38, of Lethem, Central Rupununi, Region Nine.

Police in a report said the incident occurred at around 7pm on the camping grounds at Turtle Creek, Five Star, North West District.

Pedro’s 13-year-old daughter told to investigators that her father was involved in an argument with the female cook over money owed.

During the disagreement, the cook’s husband got involved in the argument. Pedro, in that moment, armed himself with a sharp instrument, struck the suspect twice about his body, and slapped his music box out of his hand causing a scuffle to ensue.  The deceased man’s daughter, however, told investigators she is unsure of what occurred during the scuffle as she had run away from the scene. When she returned a short while after, she discovered her father with a gaping wound to the middle of his head and another to the left side of his face.

She said the suspect and the female cook then made good their escape.

The daughter told police that she went to her father’s aid and just before he succumbed, he confided that his wounds were inflected by the suspect.

The body was examined by ranks and two deep wounds were observed to his head and to his left side face. It was transported to the Port Kaituma District Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. An autopsy is scheduled later this week.

Police say the suspect has not yet been arrested.
